Marda Quincesinger, Postulant (Coracle Book 1) Customer Reviews

:
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Karen A. Wyle -- Original worldbuilding, a highly relatable story, well realized characters, provocative themes : I'm not sure how to review a book that, while for "all ages," is primarily middle grade. Here goes. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from EMK -- Fabulous book for younger and older readers! : Loved this book! This author has the pastoral vibe down- peaceful and gentle without being boring or redundant. Conflicts present in storyline are very age appropriate. There is some religious content in story, but it did not detract or preach. My take on the moral of the story is to make good choices and to be kind and tolerant to all. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Caitlin Walsh -- Gentle, heartening, fun : Marda is a bit of a fussbudget, and absolutely endearing for all of that; her nature, thoughtful and fussy both, helps bring together a team of companions, and also to help gentle each of their rough edges as they begin to develop both by themselves and as a team. Not every problem can be solved immediately, and sometimes the problem is that you need to learn to live with it... but we're all people, all with strengths and foibles, and we all want to help heal the world in the wake of its shattering by the Adversary. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from elbren -- christian-ish mild-mannered fantasy : This is a fantastical (and fantastic) middle-grade book with floating islands, magical basket-boats, dragons, and ravens. It's not exactly Christian, but the world has a Savior, and an Adversary, and churches, and saints, and has a very Christian feel to it. There's no royalty, and the children don't save the world, and it's a unique, wonderful, engaging read. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from byrdloves2read -- Wish I had a Youngster to Read this to : I don't know that I can add much to the other reviews that have already been posted. Yes, there are Christian similarities - a Savior with Companions, God, the Adversary (which was the original meaning of Satan), Saints, healing a broken world. Marda is a postulant, rather like those who go to seminary. There are gently taught lessons of friendship, family and patience. I've ordered this in hardcover for a friend who does have young children. I hope they enjoy this as much as I have. I have loved all Hogarth's pastoral books, this is no exception. Hope there are more books in the Coracle series. I'm a senior citizen, BTW. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Andrew Foth -- Fascinating start to a series : This is a gentle book, There are no ferocious monsters, evil villians, or even nasty co woorkers or fellow students…The conflicts are internal and low key. But the development and resolution have gentle wisdom and compassion in the explication. The world has a Catholic flavor (though the Saviour is a woman) - it is set in an abbey, after all, and the students share the neccessary day to day work to maintain the abbey and cook and clean for their fellow students and faculty. The mundane labors often allow the author to develop and grow the character. There are several aspects of the world that are presented (the godsibs) that I suspect wil be important later. ( I do want more of the dragon!) ( Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Deb Acorn -- Can't wait for book 2 : I really loved this book and enjoyed learning about Marda, her friends, and the odd world they inhabit. In Coracle, magic is expected, God is real, Saints and Angels can talk to you, and understanding oneself and others is key. I do wish that the book came with color illustrations though. The images would be stunning. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from shaper -- excellent start to new series : a book for kids that is thoroughly fun for adults too. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 22, 2021 )
