:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from scott day -- Who does the story serve? : Although I'm especially partial to Anne Ursu's book Breadcrumbs, I consider her latest book, The Troubled Girls of Dragomir Academy, her finest work. Ursu is a remarkable storyteller. She displays those storytelling gifts in a chilling and rage-filled tale about power and the way it is used to intimidate and isolate people, especially girls. The story is both painful and necessary. Near the book's beginning, a question is asked: "Who does the story serve?" I worried so much for Marya and the other girls at the academy, and in fact, all the girls in their fictional fantasy country. I really thought it was going to turn into a series, because I thought the issues in the book were so incredibly large that they could not possibly resolve them all by the end of this book. And they weren't all resolved, but things surprisingly went in a better direction than I'd anticipated, and while there turned out not to be a setup for one, I would definitely read sequels! Marya’s brother wants to be a sorcerer, but when Marya messes up his evaluation, she is sent to a school for troubled girls called Dragomir Academy. As Marya and the other girls learn about being proper, conforming young women, they also find out more about the patriarchal society in which they live, as well as the Dread, which attacks whole villages.
